What Does ICL Surgery Cost?

What Does ICL Surgery Cost?

If only the best things in life were free. But unfortunately ICL does cost something. But how much? There are some factors at play, but the average cost for a bilateral ICL surgery in the United States in 2021 is $7,000 to $10,000. Let's break down the costs further to see how it all adds up.

With ICL surgery, you take home a new lens

The first main cost of ICL is the actual lens itself. Anything complex and advanced in medicine does have a cost and the ICL is no exception. Your surgeon pays the manufacturer anywhere from $750 to $1,500 per ICL lens. Prices vary depending on the type and power of ICL needed. Prices can also vary depending on the surgeon and their volume of ICL surgeries they perform. Between both eyes, the ICL lenses make up $1,500 to $3,000 of the total cost of ICL surgery.

Most surgeons perform ICL surgery in a surgery center

Surgery centers are a natural choice given they already have important equipment such as an operating microscope. Surgery centers have staff trained in sterile technique and sterile processing of instruments and have all the supplies needed to perform surgery. The downside of surgery centers is that they add to the cost of ICL surgery (after-all, the surgery center has to pay their employees, restock the supplies and pay their rent). This adds another $2,000 to $3,000 to the cost of ICL surgery.

But there is another option. ICL surgery can be performed in office! A dedicated operating room can be created within the office with the same sterile standards as a surgery center. By investing in all the necessary operating equipment and keeping the costs in house, this can reduce the extra added cost to ICL. There still will be material and staffing costs but a well-run (and efficient) practice can potentially do things cheaper than a surgery center. And by keeping the costs down the practice can pass on those savings to YOU. But operating in office isn't an option for all surgeons and so your results may vary trying to seek this out.

So What's left?

So we have the remaining ~$3,000 to $4,000. What is that for? There is more than just the surgeon involved in your ICL surgery. A team of personnel work together to ensure your success. This starts even before your initial visit with people working to bring you in the office in the first place. This continues when you call the office and talk with someone to schedule your consultation appointment. At all your visits, techs perform detailed scans on your eyes and eye doctors perform thorough evaluations of your eyes. If you have questions, someone is available to chat with you on the phone. There are lots of moving parts to ICL surgery; wages for the surgeon and staff, rent for the office and equipment all add to the cost of ICL surgery.

So what's the cost of having great clear vision through ICL surgery? Priceless! (but also $7,000 - $10,000). So break out that piggy bank, or take advantage of some financing options so that you can see life clearly.
